How to enable internet on fresh Win 2k8 installation

After you install Windows 2k8, it's fully locked down with no internet access. You need to do the following:

  1. Go to the Network Center and right click on the LAN network adapter, then go to Properties
  2. Go to TCP/IP 4 protocol and hit Properties
  3. Put in the correct IP, netmask, gateway and DNS server IPs
  4. Make sure to enable RDP service and allow access in Windows firewall - also need to enable it in Server Manager so it's active - see link!
  5. Make sure the driver is up to date for the NIC. You can update it using the mounted ISO image to search for the latest driver.

The above should do it.

If there is a raid card, you may need to specify the OS disk to be the boot drive. In an adaptec card do the following:

1. Go to raid BIOS
2. Manage arrays
3. Select the volume the OS is installed on
4. Hit Ctrl+B to bring it to the top of list
5. Hit ESC until you reboot
